40-Gallon Water Heater Replacement Cost
Compare current 40-gallon installed ranges while keeping fuel, delivery, removal and property upgrades visible.
HomeGuide's January 2026 capacity table places a 40-gallon storage water heater around $600–$3,000 installed. Fixr's January 2026 study reports a narrower $700–$2,300 national range and a $1,650 average. Different fuels, models, warranties and upgrade scope explain why these observations should screen—not replace—a local itemized quote.
What changes the result?
A useful calculation starts with the physical scope and the written commercial terms. These are the factors to make explicit:
- Gas or electric model and warranty
- First-hour rating and recovery
- Tank dimensions and access
- Venting, circuit and connection changes
- Removal, permit, pan, drain and expansion control
Use one scope for every quote
Give each business the same information and ask it to resolve the same boundaries. That makes the totals more comparable and exposes work left as an allowance or exclusion.
- Record the old model and fuel
- Check first-hour delivery
- Compare one complete installed scope
- Confirm removal and code work
Two current cost observations
HomeGuide reports $600–$3,000 installed for 40 gallons. Fixr reports $700–$2,300, with an average around $1,650. The ranges use different datasets and inclusions, so neither proves the price for an exact property.
Ask whether the total includes the heater, delivery, normal labor, permit, old-unit removal, connections, startup and warranty registration. Price venting, circuit, drain, expansion and relocation work separately when needed.
Forty gallons does not guarantee peak delivery
ENERGY STAR uses first-hour rating alongside efficiency because tank volume alone does not describe how much hot water a model can deliver during a busy hour. Fuel input, recovery, set point and controls can distinguish two 40-gallon units.
List simultaneous showers and fixtures, then compare that peak demand with the exact model. Do not choose solely from household count or replace a larger tank without understanding why it was installed.
Gas and electric scopes differ
Gas work can involve venting, combustion air and fuel connections. Electric work can involve the circuit, disconnect and panel capacity. Both can require safe relief discharge, a pan and drain, shutoffs, seismic restraint or thermal-expansion control depending on the property and code.
Use the prefilled gas-tank scenario, then switch fuel in the calculator to make the equipment and added work visible before requesting quotes.
Questions people ask
How much does a 40-gallon water heater cost installed?
Current national observations run from about $600–$3,000 installed. Fixr reports a $700–$2,300 range and roughly $1,650 average; fuel, model and property upgrades determine the quote.
Is 40 gallons enough for three people?
It may be, but household count is only a shortcut. Compare peak simultaneous use with the exact model's first-hour rating and recovery.
Is gas more expensive to replace than electric?
The answer depends on the equipment and required vent, fuel, circuit and panel work. Compare itemized like-for-like replacement scopes rather than fuel labels alone.
Does replacement include hauling away the old tank?
Not always. Require draining, disconnection, removal, hauling and disposal to be explicitly included or separately priced.
