Methodology
Visible assumptions, replaceable evidence.
The estimator begins with a dated installed-cost band by tank capacity or technology. It then adds difficult access, removal, permits, expansion control, venting, gas-line, electrical and relocation scope as separate visible allowances. No ZIP-code precision, fuel multiplier or urgency markup is invented.
How the model works
- Storage tanks use current installed bands for 30, 40, 50, 65, 75 and 80 gallons.
- Tankless and heat-pump products use their own installed technology bands.
- Property upgrades appear as separate line items and must not be added twice when already bundled.
- The estimator does not size equipment or certify an existing utility connection.
- Unsafe leaks, gas odors, carbon-monoxide alarms and electrical hazards are outside a browser estimate.
What the result means
The low and high values are planning bounds. The midpoint is simple arithmetic, not a prediction of the most likely contractor or carrier price. The calculator cannot inspect a property, verify a shipment, choose a legally suitable system, reserve capacity or issue a quotation.
Review date: 14 September 2026. We change a model only when the source, calculation and reason for the change can be recorded.
Current evidence snapshot
These current national observations bound a planning model. Installed bands and optional additions overlap when a contractor already bundles the work, so they must not be added twice or treated as a local quote.
- Standard storage tank: $600–$3,100 installed
HomeGuide's 2026 range for an ordinary 40–50 gallon replacement.
- Tankless water heater: $1,400–$5,600 installed
HomeGuide's 2026 gas-or-electric tankless installation range.
- Hybrid heat pump: $2,000–$4,600 installed
HomeGuide's 2026 hybrid heat-pump installation range before incentives.
- 40-gallon storage tank: $600–$3,000 installed
HomeGuide's current capacity-specific range.
- 50-gallon storage tank: $700–$3,100 installed
HomeGuide's current capacity-specific range.
- Gas replacement: $700–$2,700
Angi's July 2026 fuel-type observation; exact vent and gas work still varies.
- Electric replacement: $600–$3,500
Angi's July 2026 fuel-type observation; circuit and panel work may be separate.
- Standard-tank labor: $200–$1,000
HomeGuide's current labor range depending on modifications.
- Tank-to-tankless labor: $600–$2,500
HomeGuide's current conversion-labor observation.
- Replacement / new venting: $100–$600 / $500–$1,500
HomeGuide's current separate ranges for replacing a vent or installing one for the first time.
- Permit allowance: $25–$300
Angi's current national observation; local authority fees and rules control.
- Removal and disposal: $75–$500
HomeGuide's current observation; some installed quotes already include it.
- Tank / tankless repair: $150–$700 / $300–$1,300
HomeGuide's current repair observations by technology.
