Water Heater Running Cost Calculator: Annual & Monthly Cost
Calculate annual, monthly and daily water-heater energy cost from product consumption and your current local utility rate, then compare current technology ranges.
HomeGuide currently observes water-heater operating costs around $160–$600 per year across common technologies, including $250–$420 for gas tanks, $530–$600 for electric tanks and $160–$190 for hybrid heat-pump tanks. These are national observations—not a prediction for a particular household.

Calculate annual, monthly and daily energy cost
Use annual energy consumption from the product's EnergyGuide label, an energy audit or measured use. Replace both editable examples with your own figures; they are not current local tariff claims.
What changes the result?
A useful calculation starts with the physical scope and the written commercial terms. These are the factors to make explicit:
- Exact model and UEF
- EnergyGuide annual estimate
- Hot-water demand
- Delivered utility rate and fixed charges
- Operating mode, maintenance and climate
Use one scope for every quote
Give each business the same information and ask it to resolve the same boundaries. That makes the totals more comparable and exposes work left as an allowance or exclusion.
- Use the current product label
- Insert the household's current tariff
- Separate usage from standing charges
- Recalculate when rate or occupancy changes
Current annual operating observations
HomeGuide reports gas tanks at $250–$420 a year, gas tankless at $220–$480, electric tanks at $530–$600, electric tankless at $340–$540 and hybrid heat-pump tanks at $160–$190. They are useful comparison anchors only.
Use the exact-model evidence
Start with the EnergyGuide annual estimate and UEF for the selected model, then replace its assumed energy price when the calculation method permits. Compare products that deliver the same required hot water.
Keep the sensitivity visible
Occupancy, inlet-water temperature, setpoint, distribution losses, recirculation, operating mode, maintenance and tariffs can change annual cost. Show low, expected and high usage or rate cases instead of one false-precision payback date.
Questions people ask
How much does a water heater cost to run each year?
HomeGuide's current national observations span about $160–$600 a year across several technologies. Your model, use and local utility rate determine the result.
Is heat pump always the cheapest to run?
Current observations are low, but the exact model, space temperature, operating mode, tariff and demand matter. Installation suitability and upfront cost also remain separate decisions.
Can I compare UEF directly across every size?
Use UEF with the appropriate draw pattern and product information. Also compare first-hour delivery or tankless output so efficiency does not hide inadequate capacity.
Should fixed utility charges count as savings?
Only charges that actually change with the water-heater decision belong in the comparison. A standing charge may remain even when usage changes.
